Enough is enough.  No more Ubuntu for me.  I used it for just over two months.  It’s a great distro, just not for me.  I finally realized this experiment was over when Ubuntu managed to change the file system to read-only while I was in the middle of working on stuff.  After that it wouldn’t boot.  Because I had been working on a remote box and I didn’t have access to my ssh keys, I resorted to using Knoppix to chroot into Ubuntu so I could ssh to the remote box and finish my work.  Yea, I’m finished.

For my next experiment, Fedora Core 6  :/
